Non-MP voted in Parliament while carrying a gun: deputy House speaker

posted at 20:05 hrs (Bangkok time)

TIGHTER security in the Parliament chamber was called for Thursday after
it was discovered that an armed aide to a government MP had voted in a
crucial debate on Wednesday.

Deputy House Speaker Sophon Phetsawang urged MPs to strictly follow
security regulations, which include requirements that they wear their ID
tags while in the Parliament compound and have their aides leave any
guns outside.

He told yesterday's House meeting that the presence of a gun-toting
provincial councillor in the chamber during the debate was ''improper''.
He did not identify the councillor or his boss. The offending councillor
is believed to be a coalition MP's aide.

''I hope this type of incident will not happen again,'' Sophon said.

"THERE WILL BE NO REAL DEMOCRACY IF WE CAN'T GURANTEE THE RIGHTS OF THE
MINORITY ETHNIC PEOPLE. ONLY UNDERSTANDING THEIR SUFFERING AND HELPING
THEM TO EXERCISE THEIR RIGHTS WILL ASSIST PREVENTING FROM THE
DISINTEGRATION AND THE SESESSION." "WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING THEIR
STRENGTH, WE CAN'T TOPPLE THE SLORC AND BURMA WILL NEVER BE IN PEACE."
