OPPOSITION WARNS OF NEW CRACKDOWNS BY MILITARY
============================================================
Rangoon, May 31: Opposition sources here on Saturday warned
of the possibility of further crackdowns by the ruling
military junta on pro-democracy groups following Asean's
decision to admit Burma in July. "If Burma is admitted they
will get more repressive as they will not have to worry
about what Asean thinks and they will feel they have gained
a lot of legitimacy and recognition," a source from Aung
San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy said.
Burma's junta, meanwhile, praised Asean for defying
pressure to keep it out of the group, Rangoon's ruling
State Law and Order Restoration Council immediately
welcomed the decision, taken at a foreign ministers'
meeting in Kuala Lumpur,. saying it had trusted that
Asean would make the right choice. (AFP)
