Burma buys $41 mln China's sugar mill equipment

RANGOON, June 25 (Reuter) - Burma, in a move to expand its sugar production
capacity,
signed a contract to buy $41 million tonnes worth of equipment from China
for the construction of
two sugar mills, a senior official said on Thursday.

Myanmar (Burma) Sugarcane Enterprice (MSE) general manager U Tun Aye told
Reuters that the
construction of the two mills will start soon and is expected to be
completed in 18 months.

The mills will have crushing capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day each, he said.

U Tun Aye also said Burma intended to export 40,000 tonnes of white sugar
during the 1997/98
season (April-October).

These mills were among five sugar mills that the MSE planned to build this
year. Earlier this year,
MSE had signed contracts to buy two smaller sugar mills from Guang Dong
Zhuhai Corp of China.

Both mills had crushing capacity of 1,500 tonnes a day.

Recently, Thailand's Sutech Engineering Co Ltd signed a joint venture
contract with MSE to build
a $23-million sugar mill with 2,000-tonne-per-day capacity.

There are eight state-run sugar mills currently operating in Burma,
according to the official.
