REPORTED ARREST OF ASSOCIATES OF BURMESE OPPOSITION LEADER
Thursday 19 June, 1997
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Burmese authorities are reported to have arrested four close associates of the
opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The news agency, A-F-P, quoted a source from Ms. Suu Kyi's National League for
Democracy as saying that those arrested included Cho Aung Than, who until
recently was an aide at her house in Rangoon.

The source said there was speculation that they were being held for
questioning about documents and other material which Ms. Suu Kyi managed to
have sent out of the country.

News of the arrests came on the opposition leader's 52nd birthday, which she
celebrated at her home with about 20 guests, including the United States and
British ambassadors.

Military police maintaining restrictions on access to Suu Kyi's house turned
away about 100 other supporters, who later attended a ceremony in the N-L-D
offices to mark the birthday.
