THAI-BURMESE BORDER SEALED, TRADE AFFECTED

Bangkok, June 13: The sudden closure of a key border
checkpoint between Burma and Thailand amid a simmering
territorial dispute has left nearly 400,00 dollars worth of
goods stranded in Thailand, reports said on Friday.
Burma reportedly sealed the post in the Mae Sot district of
the western Thai province of Tak without warning on
Thursday in an apparent sharp escalation of a standoff in
the between the two neighbor
"More than $374,000 worth of goods destined for Myawaddy in
Burma was stranded on the Thai side,"the Bangkok Post
daily said.
The closure of the post, about 420 km west of here, has
effectively cut the passage across the usually bustling
frontier and has seriously hampered trade, officials were
quoted as saying. Military and civilian officials in the
isolated border region were not immediately available for
comment on the issue.[AFP]
3,000 Koreans FLEE BURMA
Bangkok, June 13: Around 3,000 ethnic Karen villagers have
fled to northern Thailand from Burma over the past two
months to escape abuses by the forces of Rangoon's military
junta. Troops forced whole villages in the papun district
of northern Karen state to relocate as a drive to cut off
support for rebel ethnic forces still fighting the
junta.[AFP]
