Protesters arrested

KUALA LUMPUR: A group of nine people led by activist Fan Yew Teng was
detained yesterday for demonstrating outside Regent Hotel where the
Asean foreign ministers' meeting was held.

Carrying banners and distributing pamphlets, the Burma Solidarity Group
Malaysia had condemned Asean's decision to accept Myanmar into its fold.

Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Zainal Abidin Ali issued three warnings to Fan
and his group to disperse but they refused.

A statement by the Alternative Asean Declaration on Burma, which
comprises some 40 organisations in South-East Asia, said the group had
tried to deliver the memorandum to the ministers at the hotel.

Fan managed to hand one to Singapore foreign minister S. Jayakumar.
