In a statement smuggled out of her compound, Suu Kyi
		     said it is
"the desire of the people to see the convening of
		     the parliament."

She also said that "political and economic problems
		     could not be
solved through harassment and repression of (NLD)
		     members."

Suu Kyi, who won the Nobel Peace
                     Prize in 1991, was released
		     in 1995
                     after six years under house
		     arrest.

		     But the military routinely keeps
guards around her home to block
                     access to journalists and to
		     keep her
                     from giving public speeches.

In her statement Tuesday, Suu Kyi
                     called for a "good faith"
		     dialogue
between the government and the NLD.

"The NLD believes that dialogue held in all good
	   	     faith with the only
intention of benefiting the people is the only main
	   	     thing that can
bring about benefits for the people and the nation,"
		     she said.

U.S. Charge d'Affairs Ken Weideman said he has
	 	     lodged a formal
protest with the government over the alleged
		     detention of NLD
members. The United States recently announced it
		     would impose
economic sanctions on Burma in response to the
		     crackdown on
                     pro-democracy activities.
