7th Anniversary



At 1 pm today about 80 patriotic Burmese from Canberra and Sydney assembled
in front of the Burmese Embassy in Canberra and commemorated the 7th
Anniversary of the 1990 election victory by the National League for
Democracy in Burma. Representatives from the different Burmese
organizations has read out their respective speeches and a street theater
reflecting the crack-down by the military on Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and
National League for Democracy was performed in full dress.  A 5 minutes
sit-down strike was then staged on the road in front of the Embassy. A
joint-statement by the Burmese Community and a protest letter signed by
Committee for Restoration of Democracy in Burma (Australia), National
League for Democracy (Liberated Area) Australia, All Burma Students'
Democratic Front, All Burma Students Democratic Organization, All Burma
Students League, Australian Karen Organization, Karen Youth Organization,
Overseas Mon Natiional Students Organization, National Union of Students,
Free Burma International Students Solidarity Network, was handed in
personally by two representatives from the Burmese Community through the
security personnel to the Burmese Embassy. The protest rally concluded
successfully at 2 pm with shouting slogans : Down with Dictatorship,
Boycott Burma Sanction Burma, Long Live Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, We must
prevail.  Then the patriotic Burmese proceeded to the Parliament House
where the Hon. Senator Vicky Borne came out and gave a very encouraging
speech supporting the Burmese National Cause. An open letter to the Foreign
Minister, Mr. Alexander downer, signed by the above mentioned  Burmese
organizations calling the Australian government for the economic sanctions
on Burma was presented to the Senator Vicky Borne to be further forwarded
to the Foreign Minister. The Burmese Community expressed their heart-felt
thanks to the Senator for her very enthusiastic support and kind favor.
