 CRACKDOWN IN PROVINCE

Bangkok,May 23: Burma's ruling junta has rounded up around
100 supporters of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi
ahead of a planned congress to mark the anniversary of her
party's election victory seven years ago.

The activists and elected MPs of her National League for
Democracy were detained by authorities in a sweep in
Mandalay and Sagaing divisions in northern Burma, reliable
sources in Rangoon said.

Meanwhile, party members in Mon, Karen and Shan states and
in Irrawaddy and Pegu divisions have been told they face
arrest if they attempt to attend the congress to be held at
Ms Suu Kyi' Rangoon residence on March 27-28.

The sources said the NLD still planned to go ahead with
the meeting, to be held seven years to the day after the
NLD swept over 80 per cent of the seats in the last
general elections to be held in Burma. The result was never
recognised by the military junta, known as the State Law
and Order Restoration council. (AFP)

BURMA PRESS HAILS ASEAN

of South East Asian Nations solidarity on Friday as

soon become a reality, all of us being able to keep at bay
any and all who would commit treachery to compromise
regional peace, harmony and prosperity,"an editorial in the
state-run New Light of Burma said. Asean currently groups
Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore,
Thailand and Vietnam. Burma, Cambodia and Laos are
