            NLD  ACTIVISTS  DETAINED  IN  BURMA

Bangkok,   May  21:  Burma's  military rulers  have started
rounding  up National League  for Democracy activists ahead
of next week's anniversary of abortive general elections in
1990, reliable sources said on Wednesday.

The  sweep follows a  pattern set last  year when the Junta
took  in more  than 260  ND supporters  thwart plans  for a
major party congress coinciding with the anniversary of the
May  27,  1990,   ballot.  Another ND  bid to  hold a party
meeting last September was similarly blocked.

NLD  supporters in Mandalay and  Sagging divisions who were
planning  to  attend a  party meeting  on next  Tuesday the
house of Nd leader Aung San Suu Kyi, have been picked up by
security forces, the sources said.

The  sources  added  activists  in  Mon  State  and  Aerate
division  had been "requested" not  to leave the area.  The
official  sweep against NLD members is expected to continue
over  the next few  days.  No reliable  figures were as yet
available  on those detained.  Burmese government officials
could not immediately be reached for comment.

Other  Rangoon-based  sources  said a  large  number  of ND
activists  had been contacted by authorities in recent days
and  advised against  trying to  attend the  party meeting.

The implication was they would be detained if they tried to
go the sources said. Those detained so far were reported to
live outside Rangoon.

   The ND won the 1990 general elections by a
landslide, but the junta, which had organized the
ballot, refused to recognize the results and never
convened the elected Assembly. (AFP)
