Umno Youth team to look into 'violations' by junta

KUALA LUMPUR -- Umno Youth will send a delegation to Myanmar to study the
situation there following allegations by the United States it was
violating human rights,
its head, Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said.

He said the movement's international-affairs council chaired by Datuk
Hishamuddin
Tun Hussein Onn would organise the trip to get an actual picture of the
situation in that
     country.

He said Umno Youth did not want the US economic sanctions against
Myanmar to
worsen the situation there and jeopardise its chances of joining Asean
this year.

Datuk Ahmad Zahid, who returned four days ago from a visit to Myanmar,
said on
Saturday it would be unfair for an economically backward nation like
Myanmar not to
be given the opportunity to defend itself.

From the briefings he received from Myanmar leaders, he concluded that
the US
     allegations were unfounded.

He felt the US action was based on one-sided reports filed by the
Western press, and
said sanctions would only bring difficulties to the Myanmar people.

"The Myanmar government is actually doing what is appropriate to the
situation the
country is facing now," he said. -- Bernama.
