HONORARY PH.D. FOR SUU KYI

HONORARY PH.D. FOR SUU KYI

JOHANNESBURG. April 26.
Myanmar's pro-democracy leader, ms. Sung San Suu Kyi,
has been awarded an honorary doctorate in law by a
South African university. The degree, awarded by the
University of Natal in Durban, was accepted on her
behalf by her British husband, Dr, Michael Aris,
recently.

In a message read out by her husband, Ms. Suu Kyi,
leader of the National League for Democracy compared
the struggle for democracy in Myanmar to South Africa's
fight against apartheid.

"Many of us in Myanmar know of your struggle against
apartheid and your victory has helped us face adversity
with fortitude. It strengthens our faith that right
will ultimately prevail." she said.

Ms. Suu Kyi admitted that during her long periods of
house arrest she had been inspired by the poems of
Rabindranath Tagore, particularly by the poem "Walk
alone'. "It teaches you that a citadel of endurance can
be built on a foundation of anguish."

"Democracy should not be the preserve of any race or
culture because it is a system that seeks to protect
the rights of both the strong and the weak," she
added.--(PTI)
