Will the United States impose sanctions on SLORC?

IntelAsia 30/3/97

While Singapore and Malaysia squabble regarding trade ,Aussie is coping with
a scandal,Taiwan's opposition gains ground and Japan's surplus expands again
,Burma is trying to soothe the United States
by having the US Drug survey completed.SLORC's criticism of the United
States is lessening as chances
of US sanctions against the notorious SLORC ruled nation are evaporating. If
sanctions were to be imposed on SLORC ,they had better not hurt US
businesses. But is it a realistic assumption?

As a matter of fact, the American influence in the Burmese situation is
playing a major role and reasonably the exiled government in US gets turned
off by the recent US-SLORC drug survey. What does it gesture to the
opposition getting things done to press the United States for sanctions? It
means procrastination to sanction trade embargo against Burma because SLORC
is acceding to DEA's requests after US decertified Burma on drug
trafficking. While SLORC is complying with anti-drug procedures, will US risk
what it has already attained?

On the other hand, the US business interests in Burma are
insurmountable.Burma is still on the C list of the CIA.What it means is
it is still a nation of lesser importance in the interest of the United
States.Does the United States have a plan to replace the SLORC with a
democratic regime? So far the answer is "No".ARCO , UNOCAL and a few other
businesses have lobbied the US Congress not to sanction trade embargo
against Burma. And this is reality. But the opposition doesn't seem to get
downcast and bites the bullet. The United States is getting reluctant to
impose trade sanctions on Burma lest its businesses should
be hurt. What sort of sanctions would suit Burma? The rest is for the United
States to decide while SLORC
plays the Muslim card to show law and order are to be maintained only by the
military brasshats.The people
keep on suffering and businesses keep on growing.
