 Japan to seek democracy in Myanmar through dialogue

     Japan, negating the European Union's economic sanctions, will
seek improvement in democracy in Myanmar through promotion of
dialogue between the military junta and the pro-democracy movement,
Foreign Minister Yukihiko Ikeda said Tuesday.
     ''We wonder if measures to isolate (Myanmar) are the only
effective means of actually improving'' democratic conditions in the
country, Ikeda told a news conference.
