> of Fortune, May 1984) The author, Sterling Seagrave, calls the opium wars
> of Burma's Golden Triangle an 'old-fashioned battle between good and

> Seagrave suggests that because the freedom-fighting Shan, Karen, and
> Kachin peoples are often mistaken for ethnic Chinese opium smugglers,
> 'just as Contras were often mistaken for murderous Sandinista soldiers,'
> they have not rightfully garnered the support of the American government.
> Seagrave quotes the dismay of one Shan commander: 'We have always

> But with friends like America, who needs enemies?'" (p.200)
