SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung
	    San Suu Kyi
wants Australia to broadcast news to Burmese in their native
	    language so they
can hear uncensored news from the outside world.

Burma's military regime controls the news media and Burmese
	    depend on
foreign broadcasts to receive independent news, said Suu
	    Kyi's husband,
Michael Aris, who accepted an honorary doctorate on her
	    behalf from Sydney
            University of Technology.

"With its proximity to Burma and with the increasing numbers
	    of Burmese on
its soil, we hope that Australia will recognize the need for
	    disseminating
information in the Burmese language,'' Aris said in comments
	    carried today on
            National Radio.

The speech was prepared by his wife, who received the 1991
	    Nobel Peace
Prize for her peaceful campaign for democracy in Burma.
