BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- A man who butchered a cow infected with
anthrax died and 11 other people were hospitalized after touching
or eating contaminated beef, a newspaper reported Sunday.
Bangkok residents have been warned not to eat raw or partly
cooked beef, and cattle have been quarantined in Suan Luang, the
area where the outbreak occurred, The Nation said.
Anthrax is an infectious animal disease, most commonly found in
cattle, that humans can catch through skin contact, eating
contaminated meat and even inhaling contaminated spores. It is
usually fatal if not treated before it affects the brain.
Butcher Suraiman Pimchan died in a hospital on Friday. He cut
his hand Jan. 25 while butchering cows from the northern province
of Tak, near the border with Burma. He was hospitalized last week,
but anthrax was diagnosed only after his death.
Eleven other people who touched or ate meat thought to be
contaminated have been hospitalized, and seven are in serious
condition, The Nation said. It said that tests showed about 150
residents of Suan Luang were infected by the disease.
