The Hindu: Mob attacks Suu Kyi entourage
Yangon, Nov. 9: A mob of about 200 people today attacks an entourage
carrying pro-democracy leader Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and her two top
lieutenants, smashing windows and denting at least one of the cars,
witnesses said. It was not known if anyone was hurt. The move, clearly
organized by the Government, appeared to be a serious escalation in the
cat and mouse game authorities are playing with Ms. Suu Kyi, as it tries
to keep her from addressing small groups of her supporters at
intersections near her home.
A western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he talked
to some members of the mob, who said they were paid $ 4.15 each to stage
their action. Such a large gathering of people in a public place is
illegal under military law unless Government permission is obtained. The
military Government, which came to power in 1988 after violently
suppressing pro-democracy street demonstration, deals harshly with all
dissent and keeps tight control on law and order.
The attack took place 3:40 p.m., as Ms. Suu Kyi along with two other top
leaders of her National League for Democracy-- Mr. Kyi Maung and Mr. Tin
Oo--left Mr. Kyi Maung's house. (AP)
