$ #!Burma Tolerates Suu Kyi because of her father
Rangoon, Nov. 8: Burma's military government tolerates democracy leader=20
Aung San Suu Kyi only because her father was a national hero, a=20
commentary in state-run media said on Friday. "I think the state is=20
tolerating false, vile and slanderous assailing by her because she is a=20
daughter of Bogyoke Aung San, the father of the Tatmadaw ( armed=20
forces)," said a commentary in the official New Light of Myanmar ( Burma).

Aung San was the architect of Burma's independence from Britain. He is=20
considered a national hero and a martyr after he and eight others were=20
assassinated in 1947 as they planned for the handover of an independent=20
Burma from Britain.

Ms. Suu Kyi who was two years old when Aung San was assassinated, has=20
often said her father inspired her to fight for democracy for Burma. Ms.=20
Suu Kyi, winner of the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, was held under house=20
arrest for six years for her outspoken attacks on the military government.

She leads the main opposition National League for Democracy, and has=20
repeatedly called for a dialogue with the government on how to return=20
democracy to Burma. The ruling Sate Law and order Restoration Council has=
arrested nearly 1,000 National League for Democracy members or supporters=
since late May in an effort to stop the party from holding gatherings.=20
Most of those detained were held for less than two weeks but some,=20
including one of Ms. Suu Kyi's personal assistants, were given long=20
prison terms. The SLORC also has blocked the road past Ms. Suu Kyi's=20
house for the last six weekends to prevented her regular Saturday=20
speeches outside her front gates. The government has said the gatherings=20
are illegal unless held inside her compound. ( Reuters)
