More of the Same

Please forgive the duplication if I missed it but I didn't notice any
reference to this article that appeared in our local paper yesterday,
September 17. Although it falls under the heading of "more of the same",
it's worthy of passing notice.

 Military ruler
 warns activists

     RANGOON, Burma - In an
oblique warning to pro-
democracy activist Aung San
Suu Kyi, Burma's military ruler
declared that interfering with a
government panel drafting a
new constitution will only pro-
long military rule.
     Gen. Than Shwe's statement,
published in state-run newspa-
pers today, seemed directed at
activists who have boycotted the
constitutional proceedings and
have threatened to write their
own charter.
     The military has ruled Burma,
also known as Myanmar, since
1962. State-run media have pub-
lished articles believed to reflect
the government's views that the
army will never accept a back
seat to civilians in politics.
Suu Kyi, 51, was freed in July
1995 from six years of house ar-
rest, raising hopes of negotia-
tions that would lead to demo-
cratic rule in Burma. But the
regime has rebuffed her calls
for dialogue.
     Instead, authorities have
tightened constraints on her
supporters, sentencing dozens to
long prison terms while allowing
Suu Kyi limited freedom.
