What on Earth is Wrong With the Wor

Subject: What on Earth is Wrong With the Word "Myanmar"?

What on earth is wrong with the word "Myanmar"?
The word "Myanmar" as we write it in English is the nearest possible
transliteration of that word in Burmese. Therefore, we can say that it is
at least partially correct phonetically, phonemically, phonologically,
morphologically (morphemically?), philologically and linguistically.
Wow!!!
What is wrong with the word "Myanmar" is not so much linguistic as
political and cultural.
The name of the country was changed in 1989 by a military government
which killed at least three thousand peaceful, unarmed students and young
people; a government which violated the laws of the country, even the laws
enacted by itself; a government which is brutal. ["Brutal" is the
adjective form of "brute" -- animal, especially large or fierce one. See
page 145 of
Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English, Fourth Edition,
by A.S. Hornby.]
The name of the country was changed by a fascist government without
any referendum. If they had asked for the opinion of the people, the
people would have supported the adoption (the use) of the word "Myanmar"
wholeheartedly. But the "brutal" (meaning cruel, savage, merciless,
according to the aforementioned dictionary) military leaders had (and
have) no regard whatsoever for the the opinions, attitudes and thoughts
of the people.
The brutal (uncultured, animal-like) generals say that the term
Myanmar is inclusive of all the indigenous races inhabiting the land, and
Bamar is one of the races. According to them, the term Bamar is only for
the people known by that term, but the term Myanmar is for all the races
of the Union. In fact, Bamar and Myanmar are the same. These two words are
interchangeable. Bamar is more a spoken term whereas Myanmar is more a
written term. (More about that later, in future postings.)
What is wrong with the term "Myanmar" is that it was one-sidedly
adopted by the much-hated generals, who hate the people, harrassing them,
imprisoning them, torturing them and killing them.
