Burma:Suu Kyi Vows To Push Ahead With Meeting Despite Ban

RANGOON (AP-Dow Jones)--Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi planned Friday
to hold her weekly meeting with supporters this weekend in defiance of a
prohibition from the military regime.
Suu Kyi left a message for reporters telephoning her home, delivered by a
supporter, saying, 'Please tell them I will proceed with the Saturday lecture
as usual.'
There was no sign how the ruling junta would respond to the challenge from
Suu Kyi, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, to warnings given this week
to Aung Shwe, chairman of her National League for Democracy.
Opposition sources have said Aung Shwe was told by the State Law and Order
Restoration Council, or SLORC, that the meetings would be banned starting
Saturday. A government source confirmed the order and said that the party had
abused the SLORC's leniency.
The ban would deprive thousands of ordinary Burmese of their only chance to
see Suu Kyi since the regime freed her from six years of house arrest last
July. Many thousands more around Rangoon and the country listen to clandestine
tapes made at the meetings.
The ban was not officially announced in Friday's press, leaving the
authorities several options on enforcing it.
