Junta acts on Suu Kyi
*********************
Rangoon: Burma's military junta had banned opposition leader Ms
Aung San Suu Kyi from holding her popular twice-weekly meetings outside
her home and had threatened to shut her party down, opposition source
said last night.
But Ms Suu Kyi had vowed to continue her addresses, which had
attracted record crowds in the past few weeks, a source from her National
League for Democracy said.
"She has said she will go on with her regular meetings as usual,"
he said.
The junta's move came as the Massachusetts Senate joined the
State's Lower House yesterday in approving sanctions legislation banning
State contracts with companies doing business in Burma.
Ms Suu Kyi told Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun in an interview published
yesterday that she favoured a boycott of products made by companies
investing in Burma.
The Masschusetts sanctions would bar any State-run office or
agency from deals with any company with investments, factories or
licencsing and franchise agreements in Burma.
That means State-run business companies would be prohibitted from
buying petrol from Texaco, ARCO or Unocal.
