US SAYS "RELEASE ALL DETAINEES IMMEDIATELY"

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House called on Burma's military regime
Saturday to "release all detainees immediately" and said it was discussing
with European and Asia nations "a coordinated response" to the events in
Burma.
White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry said the United States wants to
make certain the latest crackdown on the democracy movement in Burma is
addressed at an upcoming economic conference of leading industrial nations
as well as in regional talks among Asian nations.
The arrest of 217 pro-democracy demonstrators in Burma has brought
threats of trade sanctions against the country. McCurry said a U.S. envoy
would meeting with representatives of European and Asian nations on
developing "a coordinated response to ongoing events" in Burma.
"We again call on the authorities in Burma to engage in a meaningful
political dialogue with the democratic opposition leaders and
representatives of the ethnic minorities," McCurry said in a statement. He
also urged U.S. citizens to "reconsider non-essential travel" to Burma.
