Subject: FBC/BURMANET: Students to launch hunger strike over sanctions, arrests.

Hunger Strike for a Free Burma

Time: 12:00 noon
Place: Capitol, Washington D.C.

A group of Burmese and American students are launching a hunger strike at
the Capitol today in protest over the ongoing crackdown on pro-democracy
forces in Burma. The students are demanding that the Congress adopt
sanctions against Burma's military regime. Among the hunger strikers
will be Zarni, the coordinator for the Free Burma Coalition.

The students are demanding:

1) that the U.S. government exert strong pressure on the SLORC to
release 91 political prisoners arrested over the last two days;

2) that the Congress adopt a bi-partisan sanctions bill known as Burma
Freedom and Democracy Act (S. 1511);

3) that US corporations cease doing business with Burma's dictators.

Members of Stanford University Student Environmental Action Coalition,
UCLA Rainforest Action Network, Seattle Campaign for a Free Burma, and
Los Angeles Campaign for a Free Burma will join the hunger strike.

If you want to join the hunger strikers, please come. Even if you can
only come by for a short time, please join with us and show the people
inside Burma that those of us on the outside have not forgotten.
