 Burmese authorities detain more dissidents
RANGOON, May 22 (Reuter) - Burma's military authorities
detained more pro-democracy politicians on Wednesday bringing to
71 the number held since Monday, a source close to opposition
leader Aung San Suu Kyi said.
"Up to now the number has increased to 71. Today in Rangoon
they detained Win Htein, secretary to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," the
source told Reuters.
The detention of politicians belonging to Suu Kyi's National
League for Democracy (NLD) party began on Monday and was aimed
at blocking an NLD congress due to begin on Sunday, Suu Kyi said
on Tuesday.
The party congress, to mark the sixth anniversary of a 1990
election in which the NLD won more than 80 percent of the seats,
was going ahead, the source close to Suu Kyi said.
"Of course, it will go ahead as planned," he said.
Leaders of the ruling military body, the State Law and order
Restoration Council (SLORC), earlier this week warned the
pro-democracy party against any activities seen as threatening
the stability of the country.
