S.H.A.N : SSA STRONGHOLD AT WAN HAI FORCED TO MOVE
April 8, 1996

In early March, SLORC in northern Shan State ordered SSA to dismantle one of
their military camps ( under Lt. Col. Pang Fah of 1st Brigade ) at Wan Hai and
move to Nam Lao village ( east of Murng Kao ). Many officers and soldiers and
some of their families had to take their belongings and move to Nam Lao.

But one Lt. Col. Aung Murng ( deputy commander of 1st Brigade ) defied the order
and continued to stay with his family and belongings. " I won't move, no matter
what, " he said. Even if they shoot, I'll shoot back." It was said that there
were some members of KNILA of Karenni State, disguised as SSA soldiers, who had
been in Wan Hai camp since after the surrender of the MTA. There were about
500-600 SSA troops in and around Wan Hai camp ( Wan Hai is located near Wan Sor
in Kesi township, 25 miles to the southeast and 16 miles west of Murng Su ).

After the news reached Lt. Col.Thun Leng, commander of SLORC LIR no. 246
stationed on Murng Su hill, he said angrily: " How dare this Wan Hai camp defy
my order ! Even Khun Sa's MTA had to kowtow to us. Maybe they should be taught a
lesson ! "

This Burmese officer is said to be very hottempered and violent. He once slapped
a man's face, beat him, because that man had happened to ride a bicycle in front
of him.
