Burma Research Journals

                          Burma Research Journals

A Short Background

Journal of the Burma Research Society had published its regular
journals since before the 2nd military coup of 1962. Its Articles were
so effective that when the then General Ne Win came to power he
prohibited the continue publishing of the journal . After a laspe of
several years it was resumed again but came under the thumb of the
military and subjected to the Press and Secrutiniy Division. Eventually
it ceased to be an effective tool as most the subjects chosen were
historical and does not deal d irectly with the current affairs.Hence
the need of the Journal became a necessity

Everybody seems to admit that the pen is mightier than the sword
and Burmese literature both in English and Burmese has been published
inside and abroad. Admitedly those publish inside the country has to
pass through the census while those outside the contry have a much
freeer hand. A rough survey of these Burmese l iterature, would reveal
that most of the them follow their own interest and serve as one of the
components of a propaganda.machine. This is a natural outcome.
Obviously the Information Centres or the institutions of the respective
governments and organiza tions which they represent will always
endeavour to justify its stand. Thus during the Soviet Union days the
CPSU (Communits Party Soviet Union) always write that they are right, so
also the the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) or the USIS (United States
Infor mation Service) and so on. SLORC's (State Law and Order
Restoration Council) or the dissidents literature be it ABSDF (All Burma
Students Democratic Front)or DAB (Democratic Allisance of Burma)or NCGUB
(National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma) w ill follow the
same lines. One of the sorrowful thing detected in these literature is
that someties they are maledictory or factually wrong with the result
that it fall prey to SLORC'S counter measures. Genuine and authenticated
articles can be found only fr om a few expatriates Burmese professors
and eminent foreign scholars So it is very hard for a policy maker or a
researcher to rely on these literature. Hence to fill in these gap we
have initiated A Burma Research Journal.

But by no means it is not up to the mark. The first problem is
lack of a standing committe of the Burmese intelligentsia and second is
the resources. It would tantamount to defeatism, if we were to remain as
we are and this is just a humble attempt to fil l in the gap. The first
two volums can be availabe in the bookshops of ASEAN countries or it not
direct from CPDSK, P O Box 260 Samsennai P O, Bangkok.Thailand. Being
Alone Against Rome, the printing cost for the third issue, whose
contents can be seen below is still in the process of searching of a
donor who is sympathetic and compassionate enough to respond..Your
contribution in terms of thought and act ion will be greatly
appreciated.
