Burma drug connection prospers
The surrender of drug baron Khun Sa let rival traffickers temporarily
pick up raw opium at bargain prices.

Chiang Mai, Thailand-
The surrender of Burma's drug warlord Khun Sa earlier this year
only briefly disrupted the narcotics trade in Burma's Shan state, Thai
officials said Monday. Large amount of heroin are now being produced, the
Thai anti-narcotics agents said.
The agents said the surrender of Khun Sa and his guerrilla army to
the Burmese government in January temporarily disrupted opium supplies which
led to a fall in the price of the drug, from which heroin is produced.
"The opium traders halted their business for a short while right after
Khun Sa surrendered," one anti-narcotics agent town said. The officials estimate
Khun Sa was responsible for producing about half the heroin in the Burmese
section of the Golden Triangle. The remainder was produced by former guerrilla
groups that earlier agreed to cease-fires with the Rangoon government, such as
the Wa group.
The price of raw opium in parts of Shan State had fallen by more than
half following Khun Sa's surrender, the officials said. "The traders later
decided to sell their opium to the Wa at a cheaper price because Khun Sa's
men relocated their heroin refineries from the border areas to the central
part of the Shan State," one official said.

(That will see Slorc gave protection to Khun Sa and his men to produce
heroin in the Shan State legally and free.)
