DEATH OF FORMER BURMESE PRIME MINISTER

Senator Evans today extended condolences on the part of the Australian
Government to the family of U Nu, former Prime Minister of Burma (Myanmar),
following his death in Rangoon on 14 February 1995.

Senator Evans said that U Nu symbolised the birth of democratic government in 
Myanmar on its passage to independence in 1947.  U Nu held the post of Prime 
Minister almost continuously from Myanmar's independence until the military
took power in 1962.  He was, in effect the only democratically elected leader
modern Burma has known and as such, will be remembered for unique contribution
to parliamentary democracy in a country which has still to achieve  return to
representative government.
