TAK BUSINESS LEADER CALLS FOR BANHAERN BURMA TRIP
21 August 1995, Bangkok Post

PREMIER Banharn Slipa-archa should visit Rangoon as son as
possible to boost Thai-Burmese relation, Tak Chamber of
Commerce president Niyom Wairatpanich said.

Relation with Burma are poor as Thailand's last government
stressed ties with Indochinese countries, especially Vietnam,
instead, he said.

It was not right to let Western humanitarian concerns block
Thai-Burmese friendship and effect Thailand's economic growth.

Premier Banharn should meet Slorc chairman Gen Than Shwe, Mr
Niyom said.

The Premier's visit would also honour Burma following the
release of Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Some groups of Thai have been undermining relations of Thais
have been violating Burmese regulations while doing business
there, Mr Niyom said. (BP)

BURMESE ARMY, KARENNI REBELS RESUME FIGHTING NEAR BORDER

21 August 1995, The Nation

FIERCE battles near the Thai-Burma border have erupted again
between Burmese government troops and rebels of the ethnic
minority Karenni, a Thai officer said.

Government troops looking for the Karenni HQs fired constant
barrages with 120mm artillery guns on Friday, said the
officer, who demanded anonymity.

Thai border patrol police fired warning shots.

There was no word on casualties or results of the fighting,
near the border of the northern province of Mae Hong Son.

The Karenni are among several ethnic minority rebel groups who
due to difficulties and pressure signed truce paths with the
government in recent months.

The Karenni say the government army violated the agreement in
June by forcing civilians to works as military porters,
seizing civilian trucks and horses, and preparing for an
offensive against the Karenni.

Thai officers said a Rangoon government representative visited
the Karenni leader at a hotel in Mae Hong San last week and
asked him to go to Rangoon for peace talks.

Rangoon said it will send more troops into battle if there is
no reply within a week. (BP&TN)
