THE PREMIER OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA
State Administration Centre
200 Victorai Square
Adelaide 5000
South Australia
Dr U Ne Oo
48/2 Ayliffes Road
ST MARYS SA 5042
Dear Dr Oo,
Thank you for your letter of 16 June 1995 concerning the Burma Human Rights
Campaign in Adelaide.
Freedom of choice, freedom of speech and political freedom are basic human
rights which the South Australian Government is committed to upholding as
well as the principles of equality and democracy and we join the
international community in rejoicing in the release last week of Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi.
I understand that the Australian Government is currently reviewing its
policy approach in relation to the human rights situation in Myanmar before
discussing the issue again with ASEAN and its dialogue partners at the
annual round of Ministerial meetings in August.
It is hoped, therefore, that continued pressure from the international
community will meet with success and that all citizens of Myanmar will
enjoy the political freedom which is the right of everyone.
Yours sincerely
Sd. Dean Brown MP
Premier
Minister for Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs
