STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE OF DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI

                                                      Date. July 10, 1995

The ABSDF welcomes the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, 1991
Nobel Peace Prize winner, by the Slorc, Burma's military regime.

We believe this move reflects the Slorc's desire to divert
attention from growing mass movement inside Burma, from its false
cease-fires with ethnic resistance groups and from a growing
international campaign for effective international economic
sanctions. Knowing the Slorc's record with regard to broken
promises, we must treat the news of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's
release with great caution.

But we are delighted to have the opportunity to honour Daw Aung
San Suu Kyi for her strength, utmost vigor and perseverance on
behalf of democracy and human rights in Burma.

And, on behalf of the people, we ABSDF also honour ABFSU (All
Burma Federation of Students Union) and CRABU (Committee for Re-
establishment of All Burma Students Union) for their continuing
struggle and sacrifice for democracy and human rights in Burma.

The ABSDF now strongly demands that Slorc immediately release all
the political prisoners still in different jails in Burma.

Let us now continue the struggle for the tripartite dialogue
between the Slorc and democratic forces including ethnic
resistance groups, in order to set up a coalition government
under the leadership of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
