STATEMENT ON FOR THE RELEASE OF BURMESE
                 ---------------------------------------
NATIONAL LEADER, AUNG SAN SUU KYI
                   ----------------------------------

In 1988 there was a nation-wide-democracy movements by all classes of the
people of Burma. The military regime brutally suppressed the mass movements
and launched a coup d'etat on September 18, 1988, promising to hold a multi-
party elections. Until now, however, they continue systematic human rights
abuses and hold on to power against the will of the people.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who is a Burmese citizen, participated with the people in
the struggle of prodemocracy movement, and led NLD (National League for
Democracy) as a general secretary after the coup d'etat by the military in
Burma. She could have organized the entire people for democracy despite
intimidation by the SLORC military regime, but was arrested by the SLORC
without any legal trail in the middle of 1989.

All of the people of Burma and the world know that NLD won a landslide victory
in general elections on May 27, 1990. AS a result Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991 and 32 other awards by different countries in
following years. However, the SLORC extended her first three years detention
with two year without any concrete reasons except their own home-made laws.

On July 11, 1995 is the day when Aung San Suu Kyi is due for release after
five years under house arrest by the SLORC. But, there is still no sign from
the SLORC military regime that they have any intention to release her.
Therefore, we strongly denounce the SLORC's conduct and demand unconditional
release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners in Burma.

We call on the United Nations and the world community to take effective action
against the illegitimate military government and the release of Daw Aung San
Suu Kyi.
