Cultural Event in Cambridge

An Evening for Burma and Aung San Suu Kyi

Thursday, July 20, 1995, 6-8pm
The First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church
Three Church Street, Cambridge, MA
at the Harvard T-stop, across from the Body Shop

The First Parish UU Church of Cambridge will host a Burmese Cultural
Evening to mark the sixth anniversary of the house arrest of Nobel
Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. A 30-minute documentary will
be screened; it tells the story of Suu Kyi's house detention
and gives insight into the current situation in Burma. Speakers
will then present political and human rights perspectives on Burma.
We hope to blend the obvious political focus of the event with a
"celebration" of Burmese culture, through traditional cusine and music.

Invited speakers include State Representative Byron Rushing and Cambridge
Mayor Ken Reeves. Burmese refugees living locally will also discuss
their personal experiences.

The event will be followed by a candlelight vigil in Harvard Square.
Burmese food will be available from 6pm for a small donation, and will
be provided by Yadanapon, the only Burmese restaurant in Boston. There
is no admission fee for this event.

Sponsoring organizations include the Unitarian Universalist Service
Committee, the Massachusetts Burma Roundtable, Franklin Research and
Development, Stewartship, the Cambridge Peace Commission, and Citizens
for Participation in Political Action.
