ABSDF -- BURMA UPDATE NEWS

April 14, 1995
JOINT FORCES OF SLORC AND DKBO MURDER THE
PEOPLE

On April 9, 1995, joint forces of SLORC's miliary column led
by Captain Tin Mg Win from No (1) Tactical Command,
under the control of the South Eastern Command and the
DKBO, entered the Zegon village in Bilin township in Mon
State and shot at the villagers. As a result, Mg. Yit (AKA)
Phar Toe Kae (son of U New War) and Ma Win Htay
(daughter of U Kyaw Din) passed away on the spot. Both
were 23 years old.

On April 10, 1995, the same forces entered the Mae Pa Li
village and shot at the villagers repeatedly. Consequently 20-years-old Mg My
int Oo (Son of U Phar Doe), a mahout in that
village, died. On account of that, the people in the region are
in a state of alarm.

MUSLIM LAWYER SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS
IMPRISONMENT IN LOIKAW

U Wai Lin, a Muslim lawyer from Loikaw, capital of the
Kayah State, was sentenced to five years in prison for holding
a meeting to discuss the SLORC's order to relocate a local
Islamic cemetery. The order to move the cemetery came from
the Loikaw Law and Order Restoration Council. Loikaw's
military intelligence branch No (27) discovered the meeting of
Muslims concerned over the cemetery issue had taken place
and U Wai Lin was arrested. His five year sentence, handed
down in the third week of March, was for violation of the
Emergency Provision Act, an act which gives almost unlimited
power to the administrative body to arrest and imprison the
victim for security reasons.

SLORC'S RESPONSE TO THE CANADIAN
GOVERNMENT
NO VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN BURMA

According to the information from the SLORC's Burma
Broadcasting Station on April 19, 1995, the SLORC
responded to the Canada Government that it manifestly stands
against the human rights violations and there is absolutely no
human rights violation in Burma,
Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affair and International Trade
issued a statement on the current situation in Burma on
February 22, 1995. In that statement, the Minister of Foreign
Affairs expressed concern over the battles on the Thai-Burma
border and urged the SLORC to carry out national
reconciliation among all ethnic nationalities in Burma.
In reference to that statement, the Burmese Embassy in
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, sent a letter, as a response from
the SLORC, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Canada. In
that letter, the SLORC stated, "The expression of the Canadian
Foreign Minister based on the unreliable sources came from
the armed rebellious groups. lt is obvious that the Canadian
Government would like to intervene in the internal affairs of
Burma. It is incorrect and the evidence is not strong.
Altogether 14 ethnic armed groups have been returned to the
legal fold and are carrying out the regional development
programmes. Some persons were taken action toward by the
SLORC. Nevertheless, it is not because of their political
beliefs but because of the violations of the existing laws."
It is known that "Some persons" whom the SLORC referred to
were Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners. Up
to now, the SLORC has been denying that there are any
political prisoners in Burma.
