Re: A Rally for Burma's Freedom at Thai Embassy
There will be a rally in front of the Royal Thai Embassy in
Washington, DC on February 24, 1995. The purpose of the rally is to urge
the Thai government to take a stand against the regime of Burma. For long,
we, the Burmese expatriates around the world, have been urging the Thai
government to be aware of the military junta's suppression of its own people
and its belligerent attitude toward its neighboring countries. The Thai
government, however, has adopted its so-called "constructive engagement"
policy in dealing with the Burmese military to coddle it into becoming more
benignant.
Last week's incident is an unmistakable proof of that. A number of
Burmese troops intruded the Thai territory to advance to the camps of the
Karen refugees who fled into Thailand after their homes around Manerplaw had
been overrun by the Burmese troops. Some amount of rice bags, stored for
the consumption of the people in the camp, were also taken away. They even
threatened the local Thai army to stop helping the Karen refugees in fight or
to expect the same intrusion otherwise. The Burmese troops has now and then
threatened the integrity of its neighbor and has practically invaded Thailand.
Now is the time for the Thai government to abandon its illusion of the
wisdom and effectiveness of ill-advised policy of "constructive engagement."
Now is the time for the Thai government to take a firm stand against
the Burmese junta and join the international community in pressuring it into
heeding to the democratic aspirations of the Burmese people.
Please join us.
