Karenni--Walking with the Angels
March 20-26, 1995

Photo exhibition by Dean Chapman at Kyoto YMCA
Shijo Center "Axis"; sponsored by Kyoto YMCA, in
cooperation with Burmese Relief Center--Japan.

Dean Chapman, a photo-journalist from UK, spent 14
months on the Thai-Burmese border in Karenni
villages photographing the life of this group of
refugees from Burma. The Karenni are one of the
major ethnic minorities which have been fighting with
the central government for almost forty years. This
collection of stunning black and white photos includes
pictures of the Kayan, a Karenni group noted for their
Long-Neck women, who recently fled the fighting deep
in Karenni State and now are staying near the border.

In conjunction with the photo exhibition, Burmese
Relief Center--Japan is planning a series of special
programs each day, including the first Japan showing
of the French documentary on Aung San Suu Kyi,
"Silence and Fear" (in English). Other activities
include a talk by Michiko Terai, "My Friend Aung
San Suu Kyi of Burma," an introduction and
performance of Burmese music by Min Aung Thu, a
classic Burmese movie directed by U Thu Ka, Dr.
Kyaw Tint of Nagoya speaking on "Why Japanese
Cannot Understand Burma," Carol Schlenker, on "The
Not So Golden Triangle," and on-going displays of
Burmese refugee children's art and Karenni costumes
and artifacts. Burmese tea and delicacies will be
served during a reception on March 21. For more
