I visited Manerplaw last week and interviewed Daniel Aung for about five
hours.  I have also been gathering documentation on the convention with a
view to writing a detailed report about how it works.  To few people's
surprise, the evidence so far points to an Orwellian sham.

One document I was given by the National League for Democracy-Liberated Area
office was a forty-page statement of views by the 90+ NLD members taking part
in the convention.  It was smuggled from Rangoon to the border where it has
now been printed in booklet form.  I think it would be an essential part of
any thorough analysis of the convention but the problem I have is that it is
written in Burmese.  To be widely usable, it will need to be translated into
English.  

According to Prof. David Steinberg who lectured in Chiang Mai last week, the
Japanese government is considering a resumption of aid to Burma based on the
premise that the convention is "progress towards democracy."  If Steinberg is
correct about Japan's intent, it is even more important that the views of the
NLD members participating in the convention are known to the world.

If one of the readers of soc.culture.burma is willing to translate this
document or pay for a translation, it would be a great service to all.  I'm
not in a position to be able to pay for a long translation and I can't
translate it myself.
