MYSTERIOUS BLASTS ROCK BURMA TOWN

A coordinated bomb attack, linked to Burma's minority community, hit
government targets in a town in western Burma recently, a Rangoon-
based diplomat said yesterday.

Nine bombs exploded in Maung Daw city in Arakan State, near the
border with Bangladesh, in the early hours of April 28. Details of the
attack were sketchy but there were no reports of injuries, the diplomat
said.

An internal report issued by an international agency operating in
Burma said the bombs were placed at government buildings.

"The targets were nearly every government institution available," and
included a police station, a fire station and a primary school, said the
report, a copy of which was seen by Reuters yesterday.

Neither source identified the bombers nor their motive. the diplomat
said there was suspicion the attack was linked to a long-standing
refugee problem involving Burma's minority Muslim community.

About 280,000 Burmese Muslims fled from Arakan State to southern
Bangladesh in early 1992 citing persecution by the Burmese military.
