NATION REPORT ON SHAN STATE DOUBTFUL
Wire Service Refuses to Run Story on Khun Sa's Alleged Statement

by Reg B. Strider

Bangkok--

According to the bureau chief of an international wire service
bureau in Bangkok, yesterday's report in The Nation that Khun Sa
wanted the Shan State to be annexed by Thailand is untrue.

The bureau chief refused to run the story on his wire service
because he doubted its validity. Laughing about the incident, he
said, "it was a case of never letting the truth get in the way of
a good story but this time I had to go with the truth."

According to the bureau chief, the story originated with a
misstatement by a stringer for The Nation that was compounded by a
misinterpretation at their news desk.
