Subject: Thailand Reports Quake on Burma-Bangladesh Border

CHIANG MAI, Thailand (Reuter) - An earthquake measuring 6.0
on the Richter scale struck a border region between Burma and
Bangladesh some 520 miles northwest of Chiang Mai in northern
Thailand on Wednesday, the Thai seismological institute
reported.
The quake occurred at 2.03 p.m., Thailand time, (3.03 a.m
EDT), a spokesman at the institute told Reuters by telephone.
He said the quake appeared to be centred in a region of the
border between Bangladesh and Burma, and the institute's
seismograph had oscillated for a full hour after the first shock
measured at 6.0 on the Richter scale.
A quake of that magnitude can cause widespread damage and
loss of life in an area up to 125 miles from the epicentre, but
the spokesman said he had heard no reports of damage so far.
