AUSTRALIA RESTORES DEFENCE TIES

Canberra has restored defence contacts with Burma, Australian
officials said on Wednesday, almost three years after they were
suspended in protest at the Burmese military government's human
rights record.

A foreign affairs department spokesman said Australia's new defence
attache in Thailand will apply for accreditation to visit the
Burmese military.
