( 5 ) Winners of Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Awards announced

Yangon, 25 Nov-Winners of Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Awards for 2000 sponsored
by the Printing and Publishing Enterprise, Ministry of Information were
announced today. In novels, Myo Win Chit won the second prize for
"Sabe-cherry-thet-the-ti-ywae". In collected short stories, Nay Myo Thant won
the first prize for "Tharafi-kyaing-hlaing-thin-pa-de-win-mya-ye-mye", Maung
Sanda (Lewe) the second for "Ame-yin-ngwe-hnin-achar wut-htu-to-myar and Twin
Gyi Win Maung the third for "Nga-taw-nga-lone".

In collected poems, Salin Phone Kyaw won the first prize for
"Mitta-yeik-nan-pan-yaung-zone-kabya-myar" and Yenatha Maung Kyaw Nyunt the
second for "Yin-de-ka-thitsa-hnin-achar-kabya-myar". In general knowledge
(arts), Dr Maung Maung Soe won the first prize for "Ze
-gwet-see-pwa-yay-hnin-naing-gan-win-ngwe" and Tkkatho Ko Maung the second
forÊ"Dagon Saya Tin-e-bawa-hnin-anu-pinnya".

 In general knowledge (science and applied science), Dr Tin Thein (Pathein
University) won the first prize for "Lutha-asa-Myanma-ka", Tun Aung Kyaw for"
Myanmar-naing-gan-mye-athone-cha-hmu-hnin-hnase-tarazu" and Tint Lwin Swe the
third for "Nga-lyin-hnin-ngalyin-bay-andaye-chaw-cha-ye". In sar-padetha,
Maung Moe Yan won the first prize for
"chin-dwin-myit-e-tha-maing-ta-chet-pe-tin-than", Dr Thet Lwin the second for
"Bagan-anauk-kha-ye-takhauk" and Maung Chit (MA) for
"See-thwin-nyo-yit-meza-myit". In Myanmar Culture and Art, Htan Hlaing won
the first prize for "She-haung-Myanma-oo-myo-daw" and Ko Ko (research) for
"Yadanapon-Mandalay-namyo-pya-thet-hnin-asin-ala".

In children's literature, Maung Tha Hmwe won the first prize for
"Pyu-pyu-hmwe-hmwe-pan-kalay-hnin-achar Short Stories", Hsu Latt Tun the
second for "Nyit Moe-hnin-achar-sarsu-mya" and Dr Ko Ko Kyaing the third for
Kalay-mya-atwet-swe-sone-kyan". In youth literature, Maung Khaing Khant won
the first prize for "Pan-do-e-dai-ya-yi". In the translation, Dr Nyunt Shwe
won the first for "Dai-no-saw-athi-nyan". Out of 12 genres, there were no
winners in plays and politics. Winners are to contact the chief editor, ,

by 13 December. Prize presentation ceremony will be held at National Theatre,
on Myoma Kyaung Street, at 1 pm on 1 waxing of Nadaw (Sarsodaw Day); 16
December (Sunday).

Rehearsal for the ceremony will be on 14 December at the same venue. Entrants
may withdraw their manuscripts which did not win prizes, in person or with
the letter of authority, during six months after announcing the lists of
winners. Entrants may submit the entries to the Sarpay Beikman Manuscripts
Award Competitions for 2001, not later than 31 December and order the form
and disciplines of the competitions with K 40 for postage. Winners of 12th
short story, article and poem competitions of National Motto and Literary
Competitions had been announced on 14 November.

Winners of National Literary Awards announced

Yangon, 25 Nov-The National Literary Award Scrutiny and Selection Committee
of Ministry of Information today announced winners of the National Literary
Awards for 2000. The winners are Mi Chan Wai in the collected short stories
for"Kama-yinkwe-hnin-achar pin-le-wut-htu-to-myar", Zin Min (Thamein Htaw) in
the plays for"Shweamway Pyazat", Taik Soe in belles letters for"Zeya",
Thutethi Ramanya Ko Ko Naing for" Myanma
Yokethe-hnin-yokethe-papu-yokehtu-pinnya-akyaung-thikaungzaya", Maung Khaing
Khant in the youth literature for"Mya-sein-yaung-pon-yeik-mya", Tun Myat Aye
in the translation (aesthetics) for"Zaya-o-gyi", Professor Daw Aye Than in
the translation (general knowledge)
for"Miba-kaung-do-yin-thwe-pyu-su-pyo-htaung-nee", U Thaung Htut (Retired
Professor of Institute Education) for"Myanma pinnya-yay-shu-khin" and Aung
Chein Bwa in general knowledge (applied science)
for"Myanma-sar-thone-hmu-dale-hnin-sar-thone-se". The are no winners in five
remaining genres novel, collected poems, children's literature, general

Prizes presented to winners of ASEAN painting contest



Yangon, 25 Nov - The ceremony to present prizes to winners of the ASEAN
painting contest for children under the theme " Kindness", was held at the
National Museum on Pyay Road, Dagon Township, here, this morning. Deputy
Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt made an opening speech and presented prizes
to the winners.

 Also present were Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win,
Deputy Minister for Education U Myo Nyunt, the ambassadors from the ASEAN
member countries and staff of the embassies, the directors-general of the
Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and responsible personnel, officials of Myanmar Artistes and Artisans
Asiayone, prize-winning students and their teachers and guests. Deputy
Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt made a speech and then presented prizes to
20 prize-winning students.

Later, Director-General of the Cultural Institute Department of the Ministry
of Culture U Myint Thein Swe presented gifts to the members of the judges of
the contest, and Maung Kaung Myat Min Soe, on behalf of the prize winners,
spoke words of thanks. After the ceremony, the deputy ministers, ambassadors
and embassies staff and departmental officials viewed the prize-winning
paintings and they also had documentary photos taken together with
prize-winning students.

MWJA helds paper reading session

Yangon, 25 Nov - The second paper reading session " Bank of Knowledge "
organized by Myanmar Writers and Journalists Association took place at the
hall of MWJA on Merchant Street at noon today. It was attended by Chairman of
MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung), Vice-Chairman-2 U Than Maung (Than Maung),
Secretary U Hla Tun (Hla Tun - Twantay), CEC members, resource persons,
chairmen, secretaries and executive committee members of MWJAs of townships
in Yangon Division, guests, literati, and township MWJA members.
Joint-Secretary-4 of MWJA U Myint Kywe (Maung Myint Kywe) acted as master of
ceremonies. Chairman of MWJA made an opening speech. Resource persons Daw
Kyan read the paper on Administration of Myanmar Kings and replied to the
queries raised by those present.

( 6 )   Merit-sharing ceremony of Jivitadana Sangha Hospital held

Yangon, 25 Nov- The 17th merit-sharing ceremony was held in conjunction with
a ceremony to honour wellwishers who made donations to the trust fund of
Jivitadana Sangha Hospital at the hospital in Bahan Township this afternoon.
Present were Bahan Township Pali Takkatho Nyaungdon Kyaungtaik Presiding
Sayadaw State Central Working Committee of the Sangha Agga Maha Pandita
Bhaddanta Sobana and members of the Sangha, Chairman of Jivitadana Sangha
Hospital Administration Boaard U Maung Maung-7 and members, officials of the
hospital and well-wishers. Then, the chairman and members and wellwishers
presented offertories to the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha. The Presiding
Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Gold plates donated to Shwedagon Pagoda

Yangon, 25 Nov- A ceremony to donate gold plates to Shwedagon Pagoda
continued for the third day at Bo Bo Aung Tazaung at the pagoda this morning.
A total of 15 wellwishers donated one hundred gold plates. The gold-plate
donation ceremony will continue till 10 December.

( 7 ) Japanese wellwishers donate medical equipment worth US $ 162,000

Yangon, 25 Nov - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, together with Deputy
Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, inspected the eye operation cases jointly
conducted by Myanmar and Japanese surgeons at the Eye Hospital here this
afternoon.

 A ceremony to donate medical equipment for treating eye patients by an eye
surgical team of Japan led by Dr Yoshifumi Fujita, who performed eye
operation on 28 patients by using Phaco method in Yangon and Mandalay from 22
to 26 November, the Association of Japan-Myanmar Mutual Corporation, Itabishi
Corporation and Canon Star Corporation was held at the Department of Medical
Research (Lower Myanmar) this evening. Present were Minister Maj-Gen Ket
Sein, Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, officials of the Ministry of
Health and wellwishers. Vice-President of the Association of Japan-Myanmar
Mutual Corporation Mr Iwasaki Hideo and Dr Yoshifumi Fujita explained the
purpose of donation and donated medical equipment worth US $ 162,000.
Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein accepted the donations and presented certificates
of honour to the wellwishers.

Minister attends opening of new school building

Yangon, 25 Nov - Under the patronage of Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung
and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi, a ceremony to open the new prayer hall, donated by
the staff of the ministry, was held at the compound of Mahabodi Kyaung in
Kyaukka village, Taungtha Township, Mandalay Division. The ceremony started
with three-time recitation of NamoTassa, and the congregation received the
Five Precepts from Presiding Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejeinda. Minister U Aung
Thaung and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi presented offertories to the Sayadaw and
members of the Sangha. The Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by the
sharing of merits gained, and the ceremony came to an end.

Next, CEC member of the Union Solidarity and Development Association U Aung
Thaung attended the ceremony to open and to hand over the new school building
of Kyaukka Village. Education Officer Daw Yi Yi Myint of Taungtha Township
and the headmistress of the basic education primary school of Kyaukka Village
formally opened the school. Then, CEC member U Aung Thaung handed over
documents related to the school to director (Education) of Mandalay Division
No 2 Basic Education Department Daw Thaung Nu. Next, cash donation ceremony
for the school followed.

Cash donations were K 10,000 each by U Kyaw Tin and Daw Mya Yin family, Ma
Khin Moe Nwe, gold medalist in weight-lifting event at the 21st SEA games, U
Aung Thin, Daw Khin Than, U Thein Swe, Daw Yi Yi Lwin, U Min Nay and Daw Mya
Mya Swe, K 20,000 each by U Win Myint and Daw Myint Myint family of Myingyan
and Daw Tin Oo Kyi of No-1 Industry, K 15,000 by U Htein Lin and Daw Hla Shwe
family and K 10,000 each by Chairman of Taungtha Township Peace and
Development Council U Aye Pe, Chairman of All Bus Lines Control of Myingyan U
Hla Than, Managing Director of Myanma Textile Industries U Oo Thein Maung,
Managing Director of Myanma Pharmaceutical and household Industries U Myint
Oo and Managing Director of Myanma Foodstuff Industries U Kyaw Myint, after
which the ceremony came to an end.

 Later, CEC member U Aung Thaung inspected the five-unit two-storey school
building. At 2 pm, CEC member U Aung Thaung arrived at Punyawanuna
association and attended the ceremony to donate 100 bags of rice to the
association and 200 bags of rice to monasteries in the village. CEC member U
Aung Thaung and wife Daw Khin Khin Yi presented offertories, and secretary of
the association U Tin Aung presented a certificate of honour to CEC member U
Aung Thaung. Later, CEC member U Aung Thaung supplicated the purpose of
donation of 300 bags of rice for the sixth time.

Next, Sasana Ponla Kyakan Kyaung Sayadaw U Sundara delivered a sermon and the
ceremony ended after the sharing of merits gained. In the evening, CEC member
U Aung Thaung arrived at the Home for the Aged in Taungtha and attended the
ceremony to donate 500 bags of rice by wellwishers to the Home. Afterwards,
CEC member U Aung Thaung arrived at the Taungtha People's Hospital and
presented prizes to doctors and nurses who are taking care of patients with
kindness and looked around the hospital and comforted the patients.

( 8 ) Minister inspects bridge construction sites

Yangon, 25 Nov Ñ Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun, together with
officials of Public Works, inspected Baingda bridge construction site on
Yangon-Mandalay Road today. Assistant Engineer U Myint Lwin reported on work.
The minister gave instructions on completion of the bridge with set standards
in time, minimizing loss and wastage and fulfilled the required construction
materials and machinery. The Baingda bridge is a four-lane reinforced
concrete structure with the length of 300 feet and it will withstand 60 tons
of load. The minister and party proceeded to Yenwe Creek bridge construction
site on Yangon-Mandalay Road. Project Engineer Daw Si Si Than reported on the
progress of work. The minister then gave instructions. The four-lane
reinforced concrete Yenwe bridge is 360 feet long and it will withstand 60
tons of load. The minister also inspected construction of Kwinchaung and
Phyuchaung bridges on Yangon-Mandalay Road.

Construction of roads and bridges inspected

Yangon, 25 Nov - Deputy Minister for Construction Brig-Gen Myint Thein,
accompanied by officials, arrived at Bo Myat Tun bridge in Ayeyawady Division
on 23 November morning and inspected along Yangon-Danubyu- Zalun-Hinthada
road. The deputy minister met with Hinthada District Peace and Development
Council Chairman Lt-Col Win Htain, departmental officials, the district
engineer and service personnel of Public Works at Myat-zalun Yeiktha in Zalun
Township. After giving instructions to the officials, the deputy minister
inspected Zalun-Danubyu-Sakkok road and designated the site to be upgraded,
and arrived Wakema bridge in the evening.

 Yesterday morning, the deputy minister arrived at construction site of
Wakema bridge on Wakema bank where Deputy Superintending Engineer U Khin
Maung Se reported him on completion of the bridge and future tasks. Then, the
deputy minister inspected the site and attended the second communal Kathina
robes offering ceremony of the bridge. He offered robes and offertories to
the Sayadaws. Afterwards, he heard the reports on completion of construction
of Shwe-laung bridge and tasks to be carried out at the briefing hall of the
construction site. He gave instructions on timely completion of the bridge,
to meet the set standard of the bridge and worksite safety to the officials
and left there. He arrived back here at night.

( 9 )   60 blocks of heroin and 200,000 stimulant tablets seized in Kengtung

Yangon, 25 Nov- A combined team comprising members of the local intelligence
unit and Myanmar Police Force, acting on information, searched the vehicle
with the number plate SW-3/0400 at Tapin Check Point in Kengtung Township,
Shan State (East) on 17 November. Aikpi, son of U Hsan Maung of Kengkhon
village, Kengtung Township, drove the car, and Aik Kyaw, son of U Aik Tun of
Phalin village, Panhsan Township, who was also in the car. The combined team
seized 60 blocks of heroin weighing 20 kilos and 200,000 stimulant tablets
bearing WY letters hidden in the car.Action is being taken against them under
the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law by the police station
concerned.
